Back in 2007, I had a birthday cake from the dark side… the dark chocolate side! Here are the directions mom used to make the cake:
- Bake 2 boxes of desired commercial cake mix, following instructions on box and baking them in a 13″ x 17″ rectangular cookie sheet with 1″ high sides. Line the bottom of the cookie sheet with parchment/wax paper for better results.
- Cut out a long and narrow kite shape on paper to span the diagonal length of the prepared cake.
- Use this template twice (once for each pan of prepared cake) and cut out the shape with a knife. Be sure to try to leave as many intact residual cake pieces as possible.
- Prepare some butter cream icing using a conventional butter cream icing recipe off the web. Add a combination of food coloring to make it gray.
- Next, line a long and narrow plate (or cookie sheet) large enough for the with aluminum foil, then place one of the cake layers on the plate. Tuck in strips of parchment/wax paper under the sides of the entire cake to catch potential icing spills.
- Spread the gray butter cream icing on the first cake layer, then stack the second cake layer on top. Frost the entire cake.
- From the leftover cake, cut out desired shapes (diamond and triangle shapes work best) for stacking purposes to build up the command bridge.
- Repeat the frosting process between these layers.
- Add candy pieces as necessary for decorations. These are what we used:
- Gray M&Ms (found at a candy store) for rivets around the perimeter of the cake.
- Yellow Fruit Roll-Ups cut into circles and mounted on Oreo cookies covered with frosting for the thrusters in the back.
- Two medium sized jawbreakers for the deflector shield towers.
- A piece of black Twizzlers licorice for the bridge window.
- Voila! You’re done. Now enjoy your star destroyer cake!
- The finished product

I was recently at a Star Wars wedding. There was a Star Destroyer cake there made by Bewitching Elegance that I think you would like. I found your site while looking for a picture of it. http://www.bewitchingelegance.com/portfolio4.html
That cake looks awesome! Definitely puts ours to shame. The kids are away at the moment, but I’ll make sure they see your comment when they get back on June 3rd.
